On September 7 2011 Yak-42 plane crashed near  the city of Yaroslavl in central Russia. The crashed killed an entire russian proffensinal hockey team. Among the dead were three former Detroit Red Wings  players were  assistant coach Brad McCrimmon, defenseman Ruslan Salei and goaltender Stefan Liv. The cause of the crash was that one of the pilots accidentally activated the brakes during takeoff and then lifted the jet too sharply, causing it to crash. The plane crashed into the banks of the Volga River, 150 miles northeast of Moscow. The only player who survived the crash later died of burns.McCrimmon was 52 and served as a Wings assistant for the three seasons before the accident and worked in the NHL for 12 years. He left behind his wife and two daughters.
